Details This paper analyzes the impact of international network effects on mobile phone diffusion across 58 countries from 2007 to 2009. The study finds that international network effects positively influence mobile phone diffusion and that the large network effects of GSM technology prevent the diffusion of third-generation (3G) mobile phones. The study proposes two new instrumental variables to overcome the endogeneity of mobile service price and international network effects. The findings have implications for policymakers and firms in the telecommunication industry regarding technology adoption and standardization.
