Details The purposes of this study are to figure out achievements and challenges of English teaching in the transitional period to the new curriculum guidelines in elementary schools. On the study, 1) reflections of the 23 sixth graders, 2) an interview with the homeroom teacher of the research class, 3) comments from 21 teachers observing the class and 4) comments form 62 university students observing it were analyzed. I found the challenges of dealing with unknown words and of encouraging them to express their own real thoughts, ideas and feelings within their limited vocabulary and a limited time.
