概要 This thesis is concerned with the geography of the cultural encounter between two different kinds of imperial nation, Japan and Britain, from 1860 to 1914, with particular reference to the idea of landscape. The building of modern Japan between 1860 to 1914 involved Westernisation but also a recovery or reinvention of Japan’s historic imperial identity. British and other westerners appropriated and consumed Japanese culture but Japan exercised a significant degree of regulation and control in the process. The changing nature of the exchange is exemplified by the differences between the two London Exhibitions, of 1862 and 1910, and I use these as a framework for introducing the period of this thesis. The thesis demonstrates how a thorough and detailed examination of travel literature, manuscripts and landscapes can be used to ground and contextualise how geographical knowledge and imagination are produced in a “contact zone” of cultural exchange.
