| Details | The Citizen in the “Cyclops” episode is said to be modeled on Michael Cusack, a founder of the Gaelic Athletic Association. In fact, Joyce himself used the name of Cusack in his earlier drafts, but he removed it before publication. Joyce, then, indicates a real person while deleting his name and creating an unclearly identified one in his fiction. This essay carefully looks at the significance of the removal of the name of Cusack and reconsiders Joyce’s portrayal of the Citizen. |
