| 概要 | A growing segment of the English-reading world involves readers for whom English is not a first or main language (lingua franca readers), reading texts that have been produced in languages other than English. Translators have traditionally assumed disjoint, determinable cultures, on a supposedly equal footing or in a fixed source-receiver relation. Here the goals and operations of translations into English are rethought given the imagined lingua franca readership whose cultures and languages are neither disjoint nor determinable, and in light of attested features in spoken ELF corpora. The case is a project where excerpts from plays (classic through modern) are translated for an intended audience made up of intermediate learners and accomplished users of English. |
