概要 | We discuss the effect of the natural length of a Slinky on its form suspended in a U-shape.
For a typical Slinky, the natural length $L$ is small compared to the elongation due to its weight. It is known that the form of the Slinky is described by a quadratic function when $L=0$. In this paper, we will find the deviation from the quadratic function up to the first order of $L$ when $L¥neq 0$. We show that our result is better fitted to the shape of an actual Slinky than the quadratic function by a simple experiment. Theoretical and experimental subjects of our study will be suitable for physics students in universities. |
